REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- The University of Indonesia (UI) collaborated with the Swiss Business Hub ASEAN to introduce the results of the latest research in technology and innovations in the field of marine engineering and design.
"Collaboration between the UI and the companies of Switzerland having the latest technology is important to ensure that our output is trustworthy," a senior lecturer at the Naval Architecture study program of UI Hadi Tresno stated here on Wednesday.
Swiss Business Hub ASEAN brought the speakers of two shipbuilding companies from Switzerland --- Helvetic Creative Technologies SA and Hydros Innovation SA --- to introduce shipbuilding technologies during a one-day seminar that was attended by educational practitioners and UI students. The technology can be applied to realize the concept of transforming Indonesia into a maritime axis.
CEO Hydros Innovation SA Jeremie Laggarigue introduced shipbuilding technologies that can help ships save fuel and reach high speeds.
"Our boat design and software expertise is able to reduce fuel consumption by up to 50 percent for certain types of boat, such as ferries and are 10 times lighter than regular passenger ships," Laggarigue explained.
He briefly described several techniques and technologies applied in shipbuilding by Hydros.
"The reason I am here is to transfer technology (owned by Hydros) for building high-speed ships to benefit the maritime sector," he remarked.
Laggarigue, who is also a naval architect/researcher, explained about energy efficiency technologies in the field of shipbuilding and energy sources such as the utilization of ocean waves.
On the same occasion, UI also introduced shipbuilding technology created by the students and professors of the Naval Architecture study program of the university.
Innovations and technology research can be implemented to improve the performance of fishing boats, cruise ships, patrol boats, and cargo ships in order to realize the "marine highway concept."
