REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The children are a crucial asset to the nation, and therefore, they must receive the best education and nurturing in order to ensure a better future for them, President Joko Widodo stated.
"Education must be our top priority," the president noted in an interview with Antara news agency, state radio RRI, and state TV station TVRI, here, Wednesday.
The education pattern, which must be applied not only at schools but also at homes, must be able to bring about character development, which will encourage the children to work hard and to be optimistic, competitive, and tough, he added.
Inculcating noble values among children is crucial, he noted.
"So, our children are our greatest hope for the future. Our country must be managed by instilling noble values and culture in economic and legal fields, among others. These are our important tasks," he explained.
Taking these aspects into account, the president has chosen "Let's Work" as the theme for this year's Independence Day celebrations.
"The nation will find it increasingly difficult to face international competition without hard work. What we need for the future is human resources, and our children are those human resources," he affirmed.
Indonesia has enjoyed independence for the past seven decades, and it is an opportunity to continue to build a better nation in every sector, including in the field of education and the development of quality human resources, he remarked.
"Independence is a blessing from God, the Almighty, given to the Indonesian nation, and it was thanks to the sacrifice made by our heroes," he emphasized.
"Thank God, we have good political stability and quite good economic stability compared to some other countries. It means that now is the right momentum to make efforts to develop Indonesia," he added.
The interview with the president was held in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence to be celebrated on August 17.
