East Java to send 480 families in transmigration program

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- East Java provincial government will send 480 families from 38 districts/cities in the province. The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of the destination areas was conducted in the Ministry for the Acceleration of Disadvantaged Regions, Jakarta, Tuesday (22/9).

In this occasion, a total of 25 representatives of the provincial government from the destination areas, were doing the signing of the memorandum of understanding. Government of East Java was also doing the signing of a memorandum of understanding with 12 provincial governments.

The 12 provincial governments of the destination areas were South Sulawesi, Bengkulu, Southeast Sulawesi, North Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Gorontalo, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi, Bangka Belitung, South Sumatra, North Maluku, and Maluku.

Governor of East Java, stated that the transmigration program in the modern era is no longer just a move of the residents from a densely populated island to a deserted island. More than that, he said, transmigration has a noble purpose, namely welfare of people, and boost economic growth and development in the destination areas.

"So this is not simply to move people, but cultures and lifestyles are also moved. They are not machines that move, but human beings, so we humanize human beings," said Soekarwo through a written release received by Republika, in Surabaya.

According Soekarwo, East Java provincial government allocated budget funds to set up basic requirements for migrants to be able to live decently in the destination areas, such as clean water, health, and shelter. Every year, East Java Provincial Government allocated Rp 4.3 billion for the transmigration program.
