Forest fires in Mt Lawu and Mt Semeru from climbers' campfire

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MALANG -- Director of Prevention and Forest Development of East Java, Istanto, was surprised to find forest fires on Mount Lawu and Mount Semeru, East Java. He said the cause of the fires was not possibly due to nature.

"Forest conservation in East Java is still good, but there really is a fire, unbelievable," he said, in Malang, East Java, Thursday (29/10).

It was unlikely to occurs naturally. Then it must be because of climbers' negligence in making campfires.

The forest police were expecting awareness of climbers to not make campfires. It was because in East Java, forest fires occurred only in hiking trail.

"We will close the hiking trail first. We recommend the climbing to be banned until the dry season ended," he added.

While, until this morning, satellite at BMKG Juanda still observed 26 hotspots in six districts in East Java. One of them was observed clearly in Prigen, Pasuruan.

"Prigen to Arjuno slopes was still burning," said Head of Data and Information of BMKG Juanda.
