In 2016, fishing vessels shall Indonesian flagged

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Director General of Aquaculture of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Slamet Soebjakto, said fishing vessels that transported live fishes who were operating in Indonesian waters, should be Indonesian flagged.

"Later, the vessels that are operated to transport live fishes in Indonesian waters must Indonesian flagged and manned by crew from Indonesia," Slamet said, in a written statement, Monday (16/11).

He explained that foreign vessels are only allowed to stop at the port-checking that has been set. It would take effect from February 2016, as part of implementation of sabotage principle.

Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries had also introduced Information System of Live Fishes Importation Application (SIAPIH) to facilitate service and licensing revenue of live fish.

"Through SIAPIH, we expect the importers will be easy to obtain licensing services and it will facilitate the stakeholders in conducting business of aquaculture," he explained.

Data of the Ministry stated, within the last five years, efforts in aquaculture increased by 23.74 percent from 6.27 million tons in 2010 to 14.52 million tons in 2015.

Of the total production of 14.52 million tons in 2015, 70.45 percent was seaweed production, 22 percent was freshwater fish such as catfish, tilapia, carp and milkfish. Then for shrimp, snapper and grouper, the production was 4 percent of the total production.
