REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Director of the The National Counter-terrorism Agency (BNPT) Brig Hamidin has said Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (IS) recruited its followers via social media.

According Hamidin, terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda has different recruitment system than IS. Al-Qaeda recruited its members by face to face. "The new members must be sworn in front of al-Qaeda members," Hamidin explained when confirmed in Jakarta, Friday (10/21).

Meanwhile, IS did not require its rooters to meet. The IS official communicate with their rooters through the website or via social media. "Why? Because it has no border between countries and it is difficult to determine the jurisdiction of the law," he remarked.

According to Hamidin, this method has a greater impact. Terrorists can do various things without a face to face meeting. "Through the internet, terrorists runs their propaganda, recruitment, spreading training modules, planning, implementation and seeking donations," he said.

Interviewed in Solo, Central Java, BNPT Chief Suhardi Alius asked parents to oversee their children activities in the internet. With parental guidance, he expected Indonesian children are protected from bad influences, including radicalism. "At least, parents understand the sites that accessed by their children," he said.
