REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Transportation Ministry has predicted that the number of Eid al-Fitr holidaymakers traveling by plane this year will increase by 9.8 percent to 5.5 million, from 4.9 million last year.
The ministry has prepared some 5.7 million seats during the 2017 Eid al-Fitr transportation period, although the number of air passengers is predicted to increase to 5.5 million, Director General of Air Transportation at the Transportation Ministry Agus Santoso said at a morning coffee session of the AirNav Indonesia office on Friday.
The 200 thousand extra seats will be made available during the peak of the 28-day Eid al-Fitr transportation period, which will start on June 15 and end on July 10, he said.
Agus said the ministry will make every effort to ensure that the number of seats and planes will meet Eid al-Fitr holidaymakers' need.
"The passengers will be transported by planes of different types. The planes also have different seating capacities. In total, the planes will have 5.78 million seats and only 5.5 million seats will be used. The rest will be made available during peak days," he said.
The ministry will soon complete ramp checks for 532 planes prepared to transport passengers ahead of the fasting month of Ramadhan and Eid al-Fitr festivities, he said.
He said a total of 510 planes have undergone ramp checks, while ramp checks for the remaining 22 planes will be completed on Saturday.
