REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has offered a number of infrastructure investment projects to the Chinese government during his visit to the country from June 15 to 17, 2017.
The visit was conducted as a follow-up to the Belt and Road Forum held in May in Beijing.
In a press statement received here on Friday, the minister stated that the projects offered to the Chinese government included infrastructure projects in North Sumatra, nuclear and port industries in North Kalimantan, as well as the development of integrated tourism in Bitung, North Sulawesi.
The minister expected the Chinese government to welcome the offer.
During the working visit, the minister delivered a personal message from President Joko Widodo to President Xi Jinping through the Secretary of the Chinese Political and Legal Commission Meng Jianzhu.
The minister held a meeting with China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), chaired by Liu Qitao, and China Development Bank (CDB), led by Hu Huaibang, to discuss investments in Bali, North Sulawesi, North Sumatra, and North Kalimantan.
CCCC and CDB parties have expressed interest in the investment offer in Indonesia. They will send a team to conduct assessment.
On the occasion, the minister conveyed the achievement of Indonesia, which experiences stable economic growth.
The minister also stated that Indonesia¿s foreign exchange (forex) reserves hit another record high since May 2015, climbing to US$124.96 billion, according to data released by Bank Indonesia (BI) on June 8, 2017.
The reserves earlier peaked at $123.25 billion in April, the most since two years.
According to data, the rise was mainly supported by forex earnings from taxes, oil, and gas exports and a BI auction of foreign exchange securities, among other factors.
Although the value was still far from China, the cooperation is expected to encourage the Indonesian economic growth.
