REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Education and Culture Ministry`s Director of Museum And Cultural Heritage Preservation, Surya Helmy, has stated that Indonesia will soon have a Navy museum, which will be set up inside a warship.

"This museum will be built inside a warship belonging to the Indonesian Navy and then be placed on the waters of Ancol," he said here on Wednesday.

Helmy made the statement at the "All Indonesian Culture Editorial Meeting 2012", organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI). "We still have to coordinate with the Navy on this project. The Navy will have to provide a warship that can be transformed into a museum before it is placed in Ancol," he said, adding that the objective of developing the museum was to showcase Indonesia as a maritime nation.

According to Helmy, the government would also build a World War II museum in Morotai island, North Maluku. Morotai island has been well known to obtain a lot of World War II heritage sites. There are seven aircraft runways, which were built by the United States government during World War II, he pointed out.

"Morotai island is a great area. Therefore, the United States made it its base while fighting against Japan in World War II," Helmy continued.

Regarding the construction of the museum, he said the government planned to revamp many museums across Indonesia in an effort to attract more tourists.

"Not only that, we are also going to revive some of our cultural heritages, such as the Sultans` Palaces and Sukarno`s museum in Flores. These efforts are aimed at preserving the local culture," Helmy explained.

"In the near future, we will also appoint 66 museum ambassadors across the country," he added. Helmy said the museum and cultural heritage projects were part of the Education and Culture Ministry's national preservation programme.
