REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Sometimes a mother does bad things to her child. Either it's abandoning his child, not educating him properly, or not fulfilling his child's rights.
A member of the Islamic Research Academy in Egypt, Sheikh Dr Muhammad al-Shahat al-Jundi explained that Islam commands respect for the mother even if the mother does bad things to her child. For example, harassing or not caring for a child.
“The wickedness of a mother to her child is a great sin and a mistake, but this is not a justification for her children to disobey their mother,” he said.
A bad deed done by a mother to her child is not impossible to be forgiven by Allah because she has endured suffering and hardship in bearing her children.
A mother has great rights over her children. Thus, the obligation of the child is to respect him, no matter what the mother does to them. “Because the mother has great rights over her timeless children,” he said.
In the story of Asma binti Abu Bakr RA, he said, “My mother came (to my place) and she was a polytheist- at the time of the peace agreement between the Quraysh and the Prophet. Then I went to the Prophet and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother has come and she wants to meet me. Can I make contact with him?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) replied, “Yes, have fellowship with him.” (Narrated by Bukhari)
Sheikh al-Jundi said that it is impossible to remove part of the Islamic code and for children to block their mothers simply because the mother does not fulfill her role and obligations to them.
“Islamic law urges a plea for forgiveness for those who are guilty to us and strangers, let alone with mothers who work hard so that their children can come to life,” he said.
