REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, said his future as PSSI's general chairman will depend on process at FIFA. Erick was appointed by President Prabowo Subianto to become the new Menpora on Wednesday. Currently, Erick still serves as PSSI's general chairman after he was elected to fill the position through the PSSI Extraordinary Congress in February 2023.

“Then there will be a process at FIFA. Yes FIFA as the highest sporting body in the world later it is they who will (determine?) ,” Erick said when he met the informant in Jakarta, Wednesday (17/9/2025).

In FIFA regulations, there is no prohibition for a state official to hold ministerial posts. Even earlier, Erick had filled the position of Minister of SOE when he served as the general chairman of the PSSI.

FIFA regulations only require a general chairman of a football federation to be elected through an independent democratic process, through the mechanism of a congress of members rather than being elected by the government. In addition, the general chairman of a football federation under the auspices of FIFA must also be clean of criminal offences of corruption, conflicts of interest, and involvement in score setting.

As such, Erick stated that he also still does not know about his future performance at PSSI. “FIFA [decided], I don't know. Let FIFA get the letter,” Erick said.

Erick replaced the previous Menpora, Dito Ariotedjo, who had occupied that position since 2023. Interestingly, Dito's predecessor, Zainudin Amali, resigned from Menpora's position because he was elected to becomethe PSSI's vice chairman.
