REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The Indian Government has offered five Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scholarships to the students and people of Yogyakarta to undergo Information Technology (IT) training, study visit, or train the trainer program in India.

The ITEC scholarships offer was delivered by the Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh during his visit to Yogyakarta's provincial government on Monday (Oct. 27).

Ambassador Singh emphasized that through the ITEC program, the students from Yogyakarta would be able to avail an opportunity of studying and experiencing India's expertise in IT and related services, which will prove to be a useful tool for developing the IT skills of scores of students in Yogyakarta once they returned back.

"One of the impressive aspects about Yogyakarta is that so many people study in Yogyakarta and a high proportion of them have access to IT as compared to other Indonesian regions," he pointed out.

The scholarship was part of the three-pronged strategy to promote IT cooperation with Yogyakarta offered by India, including the utilization of Indian IT companies' expertise to create start-up incubators for various companies in Yogyakarta and the invitation for Indonesian companies to participate in the Indian IT Fair.

During the visit, Ambassador Singh led an IT delegation from India, including the representatives of Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and State Bank of India. They met the Governor of Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X to explore the possibilities of cooperation in the IT sector between Indian IT companies and the Yogyakarta provincial government.

"Yogyakarta has a high potential to develop IT skills, and what needs to be done now is how to develop it, so that it can reach the ASEAN and Asian markets," Singh noted.

The governor welcomed the suggestions of the ambassador and agreed to extend support in implementing these key areas of cooperation in the IT sector.

Several Indian IT companies gave presentations on the possibilities of IT cooperation to the audiences of the Indonesian Chamber of Trade and Commerce (KADIN) Yogyakarta, Regional Development Bank (BPD) Yogyakarta, as well as the IT academics from the Gadjah Mada University, STMIK AMIKOM, Digital Valley, and Yogyakarta Animations.

The Indian IT delegation also visited the Digital Valley IT Park in Yogyakarta to get an overview of possible areas of cooperation with Yogyakarta's IT companies.
