REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) has sent its deputy head Lisna Pulungan to Egypt to arrange the repatriation of illegal migrant workers from the Middle Eastern country.

According to BNP2TKI's press statement, Lisna also discussed the protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Egypt with a number of Indonesian officials and migrant worker representatives and activists at the Indonesian embassy in Cairo. The meeting also discussed a number of problems related to non-procedural dispatch of Indonesian migrant workers involving labor recruitment agencies (PJTKI).

At the meeting, Lisna also took the chance to listen to complaints from Indonesian migrant workers, most of them female.

Chief patron of the Indonesian migrant workers vanguard Edi Yusuf Chaniago expressed gratitude to the government for its quick response to the protection of Indonesian migrant workers particularly in Egypt.

BNP2TKI Head Nusron Wahid said earlier around 1.8 million illegal Indonesian migrant workers are employed in various countries. Most of the illegal migrant workers do not hold contract documents, passports, and working visas.

At the recent cabinet meeting, President Joko Widodo has decided to facilitate the repatriation of illegal Indonesian migrant workers. They will later be nurtured and given access to capital to run businesses. But if they still want to work abroad the government will legalize them, if possible.
