REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, UNITED NATIONS -- UN humanitarian colleagues are deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of civilians in the Islamic State-held part of Iraq's western Mosul as military operations continue, a UN spokesman told reporters here Thursday.

Some 10,000 to 50,000 civilians are still inside the Old City of Mosul, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing.

Since the start of military operations in October in Mosul, a major city in northern Iraq, at least 15,000 people have been treated for trauma injuries, and nearly 900,000 people have been displaced from Mosul, the spokesman said.

"People leaving western Mosul report deteriorating conditions, including unsafe water sources due potable water shortages, as well as malnutrition," Dujarric said.

So far 1.85 million people have received front-line emergency support provided by UN aid workers, including food, water, and basic hygiene items, he said.
