REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Chairman of Committe of National Seminar on Islamic Moderation 2014, Syarifuddin Muhammad, said that about 80 percent of mosques in Indonesia embracing moderate concept. Speaking about the seminar, he explained that the event was attended by mosque chaplains in Indonesia. The seminar addressed issue on the importance of chaplains' role in promoting moderate and modest Islamic values.
"Stay away from provocative preaching. Muslim chaplains are supposed to teach people in subtle and modest manner, on how to be devoted to God, " Muhammad who also a deputy chaplain at Grand Mosque Istiqlal, said recently.
Muhammad said the committee and National Agency for Combating Terrorism (BNPT) co-host the seminar which involved 100 chaplains across Indonesia. The event aimed to brainstorm some ideas to prevent radicalism in Indonesia.
He also said that only 20 percent of mosques in this country practicing "radical" concept. Yet, he warned that they were quite militant. At first, Muhammad said, they usually introduced their concept in subtle manner. Once they successfully gained trust from Muslim community, then they would start teaching radical doctrines.
