REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) will send a protest letter to the US Ambassador in Jakarta over Quran burning in Afghanistan, Head of Cooperation and International Relations of the Indo Council of Ulema (MUI), Muhyidin Junaidi, says on Thursday.

“We have prepared the letter and it will be sent immediately to the US Ambassador in Jakarta.” He said.

The letter contains Indonesian muslim demand to sent those who committed the Quran burning to trial. “The trial and sentence on this case will be a lesson for others. We hope the case will not be repeated,” Junaidi said.

MUI also asks the US to encourage its military to respect of Muslim values and guarantee to prevent that such incident reoccur. “This is our official response,” he added. Yet, MUI asks Indonesian Muslim not to be incited by the incident and avoid any irrational response.

A report says that foreign troops in Afghanistan had improperly disposed four copies of Quran by burning them. The provincial governor of Afghan’s spokewoman, Roshna Khalid, said, the Quran had been burned inside the Bagram air base in Afghanistan.

About 2,000 Afghans protested Tuesday outside the gates of the base. They chanted anti-foreigner slogans and throwing stones. Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, and the Taliban condemned the desecration and said that the value of Islam had been degraded.

A senior US official said in anonymity that staff at Bagram decided to remove some literature and other materials left in a library in the base’s detention block. “The materials were taken out of the library for good reason but they were being disposed of in a bad way,” the official said.

The US Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta issued an apology for the inappropriate treatment of Alquran. He had ordered an investigation into the incident. A White House spokesman, Jay Carney, echoed Panetta’s remarks. “We apologize to the Afghan people and disapprove of such conduct in the strongest possible terms,” Carney said.
