REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian role to receive the Rohignya refugees was considered as the right act, said a member of ASEAN ICHR, Rafendi Djamin. He explained international law regulation forbade the refusal towards refugee of conflict or war.
Yet, he said Indonesian act was not enough. Indonesia is urged to encourage Myanmar to recognize Muslim Rohingya. "ICHR urges ASEAN to push Myanmar to revise the regulation of citizenship," Djamin said.
ICHR is drafting a convention which will unite ASEAN in a regulation of citizenship. Thus, everyone will have citizenship. "ICHR cannot push Myanmar without ASEAN's help," he said.
Myanmar President statement, which would expel 700,000 Muslim Rohingya, he continued, was violation towards international convention on civil rights. But, in de jure, Myanmar was not the country which ratified the convention. "Indonesia has a chance to bring this problem to ASEAN as Indonesia has close relationship with Myanmar," he said.
