REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) and its Malaysian counterpart, Jabatan Audit Negara (JAN) will investigate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Johor Baru, Malaysia on May 9 to 11, 2013. Both countries will hold pararel audit of IUU fishing according to the agreement in West Nusa Tenggara last year.
"It is important to Indonesia as government found potential losses of 30 trillion IDR due to the illegal fishing in Indonesian waters," said member of BPK, Ali Masykur Musa on Thursday. Indonesia has ocean of 5,887,879 kilometer square but the export value of fishing product is only 3.34 billion IDR per year. It is very small when compared to Vietnam's income at 25 billion IDR.
Musa suspected that many foreign fishermen sailing in Indonesian water at Indonesia-Malaysia border area such as Natuna Sea, Strait of Malacca, Celebes Sea, Aru Sea and Arafura Sea. Illegal fishing poses threats to environmental sustainability and business climate.
