REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO - Manado is not only famous with Bunaken National Park and the worldwide biodiversity, the province also has unique collections of terrestrial flora and fauna, one of them is anoa (Bubalus sp). The animal oftens called the mini bufallo and roam freely in the forest of Sulawesi.
Now, human hardly find anoain their habitat. With population of 3,000 to 5,000, the anoa population is increasingly under pressure due to forest and the illegal loggers.
In Sulawesi, there are two types of anoa, the lowland anoa (Bubalus deressicornis) and plateau anoa (Bubalus quarlesi). The Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) of North Sulawesi mentioned that they tried to develop a captive breeding to maintain its sustainability. "We worked with the Southeast Asian Region Center for Tropical Biology (SEAMO Biotrop) of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) to conduct artificial insemination and oversee anoa pregnant in the future," Head of Manado Foresty Research, Mahfudz MP.
