REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BALIKPAPAN -- Five governors of provinces in Kalimantan agreed to accelerate the infrastructure projects in the island. They are members of the Borneo Region Revitalization Accelerated Development Cooperation Forum (FKRP2RK).

"Project of roads and bridges that connect five provinces in Kalimantan must be accelerated," Governor of East Kalimantan, Awang Faroek as Head of Forum said recently.

Availability of good infrastructures is believed to accelerate economic growth and people welfare to have better life. Majority of roads the connect South, East, West, Central and North Kalimantan have been built, but the condition are getting worse. There are many holes along roads in Trans Kalimantan, ranging from Balikpapan to Penajam and Muara Kaman. Good roads are stretched up to Kapuas in Central Kalimantan. The holes are found in Pisau Island.

Faroek explained that there were no bridges in Tayan, West Kalimantan. Many roads are cut as the existence of Kapuas River, the longest river in Kalimantan with the distance between the estuaries and upstream of Kapuas Hulu reaches 1,143 kilometers. People now use ferry to connect the south and north bank of the river.

"Our goal is to connect the whole Borneo, including Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei Darussalam as well. The road will be named the Trans Borneo Highway," Faroek added.
