REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA - Hundred volunteers from several groups gathered in the city’s square or Alun-Alun Selatan Yogyakarta on Sunday to commemorate the sixth years of Yogyakarta's earthquake. The siren heard on 05.47 am local time, marked the happening of the disaster and starting the ceremony.
"The geological disaster caused the loss of human and property. People should be aware on the disaster," the Deputy Governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Paduka Paku Alam IX who lead the ceremony, said on Sunday.
He added people should increase their awareness as Indonesia was located above three continental plates, which were Eurasia, Indo Australia, and Pacific Plate. Its location is prone to various disasters, such as earthquake, tsunami, landslide, and so on.
"The commemoration event today aims to increase people`s awareness towards possible natural disasters that may hit their areas," he said.
In 2006 a 5.9 Richter scale earthquake hit Yogyakarta and Central Java province. The quake which last for 57 seconds killed 6,000 local people and destroyed thousands of buildings in the city.
