REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) is prepared to help the Jakarta provincial administration solve problems relating to street vendors and illegal parking, according to Army Chief of Staff Gen. Moeldoko.

"To assist the Jakarta provincial government in dealing with street vendors and illegal parking at markets, we can even deploy our personnel as per requirement," he said on Wednesday, after leading a roll call at the floodplain of Ciliwung River in Kalibata area, South Jakarta.

Moeldoko stated that the Army could provide the Jakarta administration with physical assistance as well as in planning. "With that, the Jakarta administration can tackle this problem, even though it would be just one of the many challenges facing the capital," he said.

Moeldoko pointed out that the Army had previously provided such assistance "as part of a mutual-help scheme" to many regional governments in Indonesia. "Two months ago, we had deployed up to 10,000 personnel to assist local people in cleaning rivers in Surabaya. We followed it up with similar efforts in Kalimantan, and now it will be Jakarta," he said.

On the occasion, Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo stated the city administration would appreciate assistance from all quarters, including the Army, in managing the city. "We want to make Jakarta a beautiful and well-planned city. That`s why we need help from all sides, including the Army. We have also sought their assistance in putting street vendors at the Tanah Abang market in order," he added.
