VP explains May 1998 riot investigations

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,  JAKARTA -- The tragedy in May 1998 years ago entered the 17th years. Vice President Jusuf Kalla claimed the government had tried to investigate the riot cases.

"The government of one government to the next government has tried very well," said Kalla at the Vice Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 12.

In fact, the investigation has been carried out to overseas, such as ballistic tests conducted in the Netherlands. Any attempt to investigate the tragedy, added JK, has been pursued. However, he also claimed to understand if the result of efforts of the government investigation has not been satisfying all parties.

The Vice President also reminded that this tragedy not only happen in Indonesia, even in United States of America. "The president of USA was killed, and until now they did not know who had done it. It is clearly there were firing in USA. Of course we are trying hard and always tries," said Kalla.

As is known, the fate of the missing in case of violation of human rights (HAM) is still unclear. Head of Monitoring Division of Impunity Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras), Feri Kusuma said, before the reform allegedly there were human rights violations occurred.

"However, it has not been resolved equitably. Until now the families of the victims demand justice," he said in Jakarta on Monday, May 11.

According to him, every attempt has been made to the court to investigate the case. He explained that there are seven file past human rights violations submitted to the attorney general and the National Commission (Komnas) Human Rights (HAM).
