S Sumatra to host World Food Day

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- South Sumatra Province will host the commemoration of the World Food Day which will be held in Palembang, on October 17 to 22, 2015.

South Sumatra provincial secretary Mukti Sulaiman here Wednesday said the province was chosen to host the commemoration of the World Food Day because it has great food potential.

The World Food Day Commemoration will have some sidelines, including exhibition of agricultural products and technologies as well as products related to food security.

In addition, the participants will be invited to see the potential of agriculture in South Sumatra, Mukti said.

The World Food Day Commemoration is expected to motivate the community to support the food security program, he said.

The World Food Day was established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organization's 20th General Conference in November 1979.

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.

The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with food security, including the World Food Program and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
