REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MOJOKERTO –- Vice Chairman of Indonesia People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Mahyudin, said that Indonesia has potential sizable dairy farms. If the farms was well managed, Indonesia will be able to meet the needs of meat without imports.

Mahyudin revealed it when he visited East Java on 19th tp 20th August. During his visit, Mahyudin took time to visit Bangeran, Dawarblandong, Mojokerto, East Java, to see activities of dairy farms in the village.

In Bangeran village, all the population are cattle breeders. Shoim is a community leader of cattle breeders in the village. He said the cattle breeder development in the village is very good.

 ''The development is very good, they just need a carrying capacity such as seed, feed and venture capital or soft loans," said the man who now serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Family Farmers (HKTI).

He said the cattle population in East Java reached four million heads. Supposedly, if some provincial governments support the development of livestock, Indonesia does not need to import cattle. In this case the government should be able to develop cattle farmers in Indonesia, so that Indonesia does not have to rely on Australia.

Many areas other than Java that are potentially a center for cattle breeders, such as NTT, NTB, South Sulawesi, Kalimantan and also Donggala. Eventhough the beef prices in the market are high, the beef prices at farm level does not even rise.

"Looking at these facts we suspect the role of meat cartel. Police and other law enforcement agencies should investigate this thing," Mahyudin explained.
