REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The High prosecution office of Yogyakarta said it has not received information for the execution of Philippine death raw drug convict Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso (31).
"No information yet about the execution plan, but what is clear is that there is no change in status. Until now the status of Mary Jane is still a drug convict with death penalty," spokesman of the prosecution office Zulkardiman said here on Tuesday.
Mary Jane is held at a Yogyakarta prison pending the final decision by the government.
Mary Jane was to be executed along with a number of other drug convicts in April, 2015, but she escaped immediate execution after a woman who allegedly recruited her to act as a drug courier gave herself up to police in the Philippines.
Indonesia's Attorney General Office (AGO) said it would include Mary Jane in the next round of executions after the legal process in her own country was finished.
However, the date of another or the third round of execution has been delayed as the government had to attend more to economic recovery.
Attorney General HM Prasetyo said that more round of executions could trigger an international outcry that could derail President Joko Widodo's campaign to fix the country's ailing economy.
Last year, the government executed more than ten drug convicts in January and April drawing international condemnation mainly from human rights organizations.
In September last year the AGO sent a budget proposal for the execution of 14 more foreign and domestic drug convicts to the House of Representatives but the plan was put on hold for fear of damaging impact on the economy.
Prasetyo said late last year the third round of executions would likely take place in 2016 but he did not give details regarding the plan.
On Tuesday, Zulkardiman said he could not confirm if the execution of Mary Jane would depend on the result of trial of Maria Kristina Sergio, who allegedly recruited her in human traffic.
"We are ready if asked to facilitate investigations of Mary Jane as witness in the human trafficking allegation," he said.
He said Mary Jane could give her testimony through teleconference or the Philippine investigators came to Indonesia.
"The procedure has to be set first," he said.
Head of Yogyakarta High Prosecution Office Tony Spontana said execution of Mary Jane was only a matter of time.
Tony said he doubted that the result of the human smuggling case of Maria Kristina Sergio would have any effect n the status of Mary Jane.
"The two are facing different cases . Mary Jane was convicted for drug trafficking and Maria Kristina is charged with human smuggling ," he said.
President Joko Widodo has repeatedly said he would not give clemency for drug convicts.
