REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia is not bound by the ruling of the International People's Tribunal (IPT) on the 1965 human rights violations and the final decision in the matter rests with the Indonesian government itself, Attorney General HM Prasetyo said.

"We are not bound by the ruling. We have our own way to resolve the problem at home," he stated here on Friday.

The junior attorney general for special crimes had once evaluated the 1965 human rights violations in cooperation with the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), he added.

A lot of things still had to be discussed because the issue had become a matter of polemic between the Attorney General's Office and the Komnas HAM, he stressed.

"Both of us share the same view now," he underlined.

Several parties wanted to refer the case to the court but the Attorney General's Office asked them whether they could help find evidence, he pointed out.

"Since the incidents happened 50 years ago, the perpetrators may no longer be even alive. The evidence must be gathered to refer it to the court," he emphasized.

The IPT will submit the final decision in the case to the Indonesian government after holding a session in The Hague.

In a written statement released on Wednesday, coordinator of the IPT 1965, Nursyahbani Katjasungkana, made it clear that the final decision will be submitted to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during a meeting with victims of gross human rights violations.

"The decision will also officially be presented to the attorney general, the Law and Human Rights Minister, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs and the presidential staff's office," Nursyahbani informed.

The decision covers 10 humanitarian crimes committed against members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), suspected members of PKI, loyalists of founding father Soekarno, radical members of the Indonesian National Party (PNI) and their family members, between 1965 and 1966.
