Rector election by President weakens freedom of expression

According to Interior Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, the government planned to issue a policy that rector election should involve President recommendation.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – An observer of Indonesian Center of Islamic and State Studies (PSIK) Arif Susanto said massive radicalism could not be a reason for the government to intervene rector election. It would weaken the freedom of expression within the campus. 

"Radical idea restriction within the campus could not be a reason of government intervention on rector election. It would impact on freedom of expression in the campus,” said Arif to Republika on Friday (June 2). 

According to Arif, radical idea restriciton would be more effective by spreading the thought of inclusive democracy that have became the spirit of Indonesian state life. Contextualization of the content of Pancasila based on the newest era situation had important contribution in the social solidarity development. 

Previously, Interior Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said the government planned to issue a policy that rector election should involve President recommendation. It was a respond of massive radicalism within campuses.
