REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Zulkifli Hasan has urged netizens to increase the people's understanding of diversity through the content they upload on cyberspace.
"Social media is an effective medium to convey messages to the audience," Hasan stated in a press statement received here on Monday.
People can use social media to maintain unity and to strengthen the fraternity of the nation.
He called on netizens to use social media as a political education platform for the public.
"Through social media we can intensify the campaign to reject money politics. Tell the public that everything is not measured in terms of money. Vote for a leader who is capable," he explained.
People can promote Indonesia's tourism to a global audience through social media.
"Through social media, people from various parts of the world can recognize the beauty of the regions of Indonesia," he explained.
President Joko Widodo had earlier urged the Indonesian population to maintain harmony and unity, amid the nation's diversity.
"The diversity in tribes, local languages, and religions is the destiny of God, the law of God, which is bestowed on the Indonesian people. Hence, we must maintain and take care of the diversity as the nation's strength," he said.
Widodo shared his thoughts with the congregation after conducting the Friday prayer with the residents.
According to the president, the nation's wealth of diversity offers immense potential amid competition with other countries.
He also called for maintaining the spirit of brotherhood among Muslims and expected the people to not harm each other, as they remain fellow countrymen.
In the midst of the spread of false news and hate speeches, he urged the people to not insult and vilify one another and to avoid slander.
"It (insulting each other) is not the culture of the Indonesian nation, which promotes politeness," he emphasized.
