Between helper and determinant (I)

If there is no obstacle in the way, Muhammadiyah will hold the 47th congress in Makassar on August 3 to 7, 2015. Various preparations have been carried out so hopefully the conference will run smoothly and productively, even if the committee treasurer Ir H Dasron MSc Hamid passed away on 24 April 2015 in PKU Gamping Hospital, Yogyakarta.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, hopefully our friend is getting Husnu al-khatimah in the end, amen. Dasron’s death was a great loss for Muhammadiyah, but religion teaches that one should not dissolve in grief, no matter how heavy it felt.

Muhammadiyah was established on 18 Dzulhijah 1330/8 November 1912 in Kauman, Yogyakarta. In the age of already surpassed a century with all its greatness and weaknesses, this "Resonance" wants to share with the readers to look calmly, but critical about the journey of the modern Islamic movement in the perspective of nationality and what role might be played by Muhammadiyah in it.

In the realm of social work-humanitarian and education, Muhammadiyah continued to expand its business in the form of charity tirelessly. When I told Hindu intellectuals in New Delhi a few years ago about Muhammadiyah’s gait, they were just fascinated to hear why it could be like that. I did not have a complete record of how the amount of thesis and dissertations written by Indonesian scholars and foreign scholars about this Islamic movement.

On 18 November 2015, the Muhammadiyah’s age became 103 years old. However, if the Islamic calendar is used as benchmark, then the age of the Islamic movement is now entering the digits of 106 years (now 1436 H).

In AD the first (statutes) in 1912, the article 2a, the intention of Muhammadiyah established was formulated by simple, according to the current conditions, i.e. "Deploying religion teaching of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alaihi wassalam to the nation residents in Yogyakarta residency". The radius to be reached by this movement has not exceeded the Special Region of Yogyakarta today.

Two years later, in AD 1914 article 2a, formulation objectives was undergoing significant changes became "Promoting and encouraging the teaching and learning of Islam in the Nederland Indies”, a revolutionary step, even at that time the format of Indonesia’s independence was unimaginable.

Perhaps, starting from AD 1914 then Muhammadiyah known as the progressive Islamic movement, not the status quo anti-progress movement. One of the conditions to move forward was for people willing to open up wide as possible by studying and learning, anywhere, to anywhere, and to anyone on this earth. Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of the movement, did not hesitate to learn on the part of foreign missions and missionaries for the promotion of education, teaching, and social-service of humanity.

Even to build a modern organization, Muhammadiyah at the beginning of the second decade of the 20th century helped by BU (Budi Utomo) which was led by those who have received Western education. In 1909, Ahmad Dahlan has even become a member of the BU along with some of his followers. Ahmad Dahlan also became the leader of the Sarekat Islam (SI) Yogyakarta at the beginning of the establishment.

In the association, Dahlan was impressed very loose, did not want to be limited by the boundaries of social, religious, and even by political boundaries. Thus, around 1915, in the Kauman village, Yogyakarta, Dahlan ever received the leftist of ISDV figures (Indische Sociaal-Democratische Vereniging / Indies Social Democratic Association), led by HJFM Sneevliet, disseminator of Marxism in the Indies, together with Adolf Baars, Semaun, and Darsono.

Baars was an editor of Het Vrije Woord (Free World), ISDV’s media, began publication in October 1915. The arrival of these figures from Semarang was to explain the purpose of ISDV to the leadership of Muhammadiyah.
