"Halo" phenomenon witnessed in Yogyakarta

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The natural phenomena of the sun surrounded by spheres, such as the ring seen in Yogyakarta's skies on Tuesday. The phenomenon is usually called "halo, Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Yogyakarta noted.

"The optical phenomenon of a light circle around the sun is due to the refraction of the sunlight by high clouds," Head of the Data and Information Group of BMKG of Yogyakarta Djoko Budiono remarked here on Tuesday.

According to Budiono, the clouds that refract the sunlight are cirrus clouds that are at an altitude of six thousand meters above the earth's surface. These cirrus clouds have cold particles and are usually tangible crystals of ice.

"These super-cold cirrus clouds refract the sun's light to form a ring that encircles the sun," he stated.

He noted that not everyone can witness the phenomenon.

"Maybe only some people could witness this halo phenomenon in Yogyakarta," he added.

The halo phenomenon observed at 10 a.m. local time is an ordinary event similar to a rainbow and not a sign of disaster, such as an earthquake.

Hence, the people need not panic or be influenced by myths or misleading information related to the phenomenon.

"Usually, after the sun shines and heats up the super-cold water particles in the cirrus clouds, the phenomenon disappears," he remarked.
