REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Executive Director of Indo Barometer M Qodari suggested that the ideal position of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is to be the opposition in the upcoming government. According to him, the tendencies of PDIP General Chairman Megawati Soekarnoputri will not compromise with Prabowo.
“I think the composition is very, very ideal. The president from Gerindra, then the winner of the legislature is likely PDI Perjuangan, although it is still waiting for the counting of seats because the difference between PDI and Golkar is not too far,” he said in a written statement in Jakarta, Friday (16/2024).
Qodari said this based on the results of a quick count of the 2024 Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections, which put the number 2 candidate Prabowo-Gibran almost certain to win by one round. According to him, the results of the quick count of the 2024 elections could potentially give birth to a balanced format of government, especially in the composition of executive and legislative powers.
Despite its temporary nature, Qodari predicts PDI Struggle will emerge victorious in 2024 elections and become the ruler in parliament. That way, the future will provide a very ideal composition of the political map.
Although PDI Perjuangan was superior in the quick count of votes, Qodari said it was not ruled out that Golkar could overtake in the seat gain because Golkar votes were more dominated from outside Java, while PDI Perjuangan was stronger in Java. With the dynamics of the 2024 election results, Indonesia's political conditions have experienced a divided government or legislature and executive controlled by different parties.
According to him, with such a political constellation, political control over the government will be even stronger. “So, in a divided government, political control has the potential to be stronger because the executive and legislative winners are different,” he explained.
He added that the difference in power between the executive and the legislature would create an ideal democratic government because there would be a government that could control each other and there would be a balance of power.
“So, I think it's an ideal composition because there will be a checks and balances mechanism as the executive and legislature are won or headed by different parties,” he added.
According to Qodari, if PDI Struggle becomes the speaker of Parliament again, it is expected to be fully in opposition. It was reflected by the attitude of PDI General Chairperson of Struggle Megawati Soekarnoputri whose inclination would not compromise with the Prabowo-Gibran government.
