REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TAIWAN -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that no Indonesian nationals (WNI) were killed in the earthquake disaster in Taiwan. Earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and 6.6 were reported around Taiwan on Wednesday (3/4/2024) morning.

The tremors were felt on Okinawa Island and Miyako Island, southern Japan, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings on those islands. “As a result of the coordination of the Ministry of Commerce and Economy of Indonesia (KDEI) in Taipei, so far, no WNI has been the victim of the earthquake,” Ministry Spokesman Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said in a short message on Wednesday (3/4/2024).

On its social media page, KDEI Taipei appealed to all WNIs in Taiwan, particularly in the Hualien region, to be aware of potential aftershocks. “WNI is in Taiwan to keep abreast of information from Taiwan and Taipei authorities,” KDEI said.

According to Japan Meteorological Agency data, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Taiwan's east coast recorded at 8:58 a.m. local time (6:58pm) on Wednesday, had a very shallow depth.

Meanwhile, the second earthquake was recorded less than 15 minutes later, at 09.11 local time (07.11 WIB). Shakes of up to magnitude 4 were also felt in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan.
