REPUBLICA.CO.ID, BANTUL — Rector of Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD) Prof. Muchlas placed hope on the Indonesian president elected in 2024 election results in relation to Palestine. He hopes there are progressive policies or measures in support of the Palestinian people.

“We hope to the new president that there will be a more progressive policy from this country of Indonesia, in accordance with the spirit that our Foreign Minister (Retno Marsudi) has pursued. So, there must be more progressive measures to support the struggle of the Palestinian people,” Muchlas said.

It was delivered after the Palestinian Defense Action and Israeli Condemnation that took place at the UAD Islamic Center Mosque Hall, Banguntapan, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), on Tuesday (7/5/2024). The Palestine Defense Action was held simultaneously by the Forum of Rectors of Muhammadiyah-'Aisyiyah University (PTMA) at more than 100 campuses in Indonesia.

Muchlas said that during this time Indonesia has provided support, as well as assistance to the Palestinian people. One form of support was, he said, by not opening the Indonesian embassy in Israel.

“Nor will we allow Israel to open its embassy in Indonesia. That's already one attitude that is needed to help provide motivation to the Palestinians,” Muchlas said.

Muchlas hopes that the support for the Palestinians committed all along continues, even strengthened. Moreover, the Palestinians have long been colonized by Israel. In fact, since October 7, 2023, more than 34,000 Palestinians have died, including women and children. He hopes the Indonesian Government can help realize Palestinian independence.

“We want more than that, we want concrete steps taken (by Indonesia) for a portion of independence for the Palestinians,” Muchlas said.
