REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed that PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) stopped all production activities to focus efforts on the search for seven workers still trapped by a landslide in the underground mine Grasberg Block Cave (GBC), Mimika, Central Papua.
“The weather there is still in conditions that are not possible because of the underground. But all Freeport production activities were stopped, all focused on finding victims,” Bahlil said in Jakarta, Wednesday (17/9/2025).
He added that rescuers had been deployed to accelerate the evacuation process, with direct coordination with Freeport management. “Mr. Tony Wenas (President Director of PTFI) communicated with me yesterday, and all our forces are focused on dealing with the landslide issue,” he said.
Earlier, PTFI President Director Tony Wenas said his agency was deploying all its resources to rescue seven workers who were still trapped. According to him, the biggest challenge is the wet ore sludge material that gets into the underground mine area of GBC in large quantities.
The landslide incident occurred on Monday (8/9/2025) around 22:00 WIT in the area of Grasberg Block Cave Extraction 28—30 Panel, Tembagapura, Mimika Regency.
