REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ISTANBUL -- About one million Turks took part on Saturday in a worldwide clean-up campaign to collect garbage from the sea and forest across the country.
Themed "Let's Do It," the campaign is being simultaneously organized in more than 100 countries.
People convened in several meeting points in 81 Turkish provinces to purify the coastline and the sea from dumped solid waste.
Turkey first joined the campaign in 2012.
According to World Bank data, Turkey has been producing more than 85,000 tons of waste each day. If the country keeps dumping waste with the same pace, the figure could reach 136,000 tons in 2025.
The organizers of the campaign in Turkey hope that the involvement of the ordinary people to the mass event will help understand the wider aspect of pollution to live in a better environment.
"Let's Do It" has begun in Estonia in 2008 when 50,000 people cleaned up the country in five hours.
Since then, it became an international movement with over 12 million of participants in 112 countries.
"We work with passion and perseverance to support the most intelligent and sustainable waste management principles in order to ensure a future clean world," according to the movement's website.
The initiators of the campaign have set an ambitious goal to involve 350 million people by 2018.
