REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An Indonesian student of International Relations at the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM), Angelo Abil Wijaya, has won the Best Delegate award at the Asia Pacific Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC) 2016.
A press release issue by the university and received by Antara here on Thursday said the international event was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from July 11 to 16.
Angelo was part of the delegation of the Republic of Indonesia to the ASEAN assembly.
The Model UN Conference 2016 witnessed participation by more than 400 university and school students from across the Asia Pacific region.
Participants from East Asia came from China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. Meanwhile, the participants from South Asia came from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The participants of the ASEAN member countries were from Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Myanmar.
Students from Australia and Mauritius also participated in the Model UN Conference.
"In the Model United Nations, we were expected to actively participate in discussions about global issues which were regularly discussed in the sessions," Angelo stated.
He noted that students could learn many things from the Model United Nations, such as ways of researching, writing, negotiating, public speaking and diplomacy.
The Model UN is a good medium for the younger generation to improve its abilities to think critically and communicate in foreign languages.
Angelo represented UGM MUN Community, an organization he has been leading since May 2016.
At the event, he discussed civil rights in Cambodia and the issue of electoral integrity in Southeast Asia.
The Best Delegation award is his second such international honor after having won the Outstanding Delegation at Model United Nations Champions Cup at the University of Nottingham, UK in February 2016.
