DMI: Digging out mosque's role in economy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – As a country which has more than a million mosque, Indonesia holds an amazing potency. “Indonesia is like sleeping tiger,” the Deputy Chairman of Indonesian Masjid Board (DMI), Goodwill Zubair, said on Thursday. 

He added, mosque should not only a place for praying. On the conference held in April 26-29 at Hajj Complex, Pondok Gede, the empowerment of mosque becomes the main attention as ‘Revitalization and Renewal of the Function of Mosque” is the theme.

He said mosque was not only for praying, but also for disseminate ideas and moral education. “The Prophet also used mosque as a medium for strengthening relationship and empowering people in economy,” he said. The function of mosque should be adapted with contemporary reality.

The Chairman of DMI, Natsir Zubaini, also said mosque should be functioned as a place for empowering people in a large scale. He emphasized, as DMI role in empowering the economy, the institution plans to aid the mosque in some the poor regions. They will also establish an Islamic Economy Council to spur Islamic economy.
