REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG - Indonesian export of textile and its products depends on demand from Japan. The textile export value could reach 13 billion USD or similar to the last year if the demand from Japan increased, Head of Indonesian Textile Association (API), Ade Sudrajat, said.

The total export of textile will decline by five percent if the export remains stagnant. "Our textile exports to Europe and US are decreasing. Japan is the only country with increasing demand," Sudrajat said on Thursday.

The export to Japan rose 70 percent in 2011 compared to previous year. In 2012, it increased to 40 percent because it was supported by zero import duty, as a result of free trade agreement (FTA) with Japan.

Meanwhile, Indonesian export to US and Europe is hampered by crisis and high import tax. To enter Europe, Indonesia must pay 12-16 percent of import tax. 

In 2012, global textile trade reached 691.9 billion USD, declining two percent from 2011. The trade is predicted to hit 747.1 billion USD this year.
