REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The House of Representatives agreed to ratify ASEAN Convention on Counter Terrorism (ACCT) that gives law assistance on ASEAN members’ cooperation to counter terrorism in South East Asia Region, a member of Commission I, Almuzammil Yusuf, said on Friday (9/3).

“All factions in the House have agreed, including Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). Thus, the convention should be ratified to become law. The Convention is important to secure the region,” he said.

They agree to ratify because the convention guarantees the sovereignty, territorial integration, and jurisdiction of each ASEAN member without interfering domestic affairs of each country. Another important point in the convention says that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group.

Indonesia can take some advantages, such intelligent information exchange especially on information that lead to terrorism. Each country will be able to provide legal assistance that helps regional communities to combat terrorism, for examples by conducting extradition and cooperation with inter-law enforcement organizations.

Unfortunately, not all ASEAN members have ratified the convention. Malaysia, Myanmar, and Laos have not yet agreed to ratify. Yusuf urges Indonesian government to actively encourage other South East Asia countries to ratify the convention on counter terrorism.
