REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOYOLALI - A joint team of rescue workers successfully evacuated 19-year-old mountaineer Jumiko Apriansyah of Yogyakarta who slipped to a cliff near Mount Merapi`s crater on Saturday night. Samsuri, one of the rescue workers, said here Sunday Jumiko was suffering from fractures on his wrist and swelling legs when he was rescued. He was taken to New Selo base camp in Lencoh hamlet, Selo sub-district, at around 11.00 pm local time.

Jumiko and his three colleagues were later rushed to the nearby public health service post (Puskesmas) for medical treatment. Samsuri added that it took nine hours to conduct the evacuation using a stretcher to carry Jumiko who fell into a 100-meter-deep cliff about one kilometer away from the volcano`s crater.

The four mountaineers began climbing the peak of Merapi through the entrance in Plalangan hamlet, Lencoh village, Selo sub-district, Boyolali district, at around 06.00 pm and Jumiko reportedly had the accident at around 09.00 pm.

The local police asks all mountaineers who want to climb Mount Merapi to register with the mount`s ranger post and inform local authorities of their identities so they will find it easy to trace them in case of accident. In addition, the first time mountaineers who climb Mount Merapi should be accompanied by an experienced climber who knows the track.

"The climbers are asked to bring a heavy jacket, necessary equipment and food supply due to very cold weather at the mount`s peak during the dry season," chief of the Selo police precinct Adj Comr Suparma, said.
