REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - Head of General Election Commission (KPU) in Surabaya, Eko Waluyo said that the turnout of first-time voters was expected to be very low despite they accounted 25 percent of eligible voters in this year's elections. The prediction was concluded after Ministry of Communication and Information Technology in collaboration with General Election Commission (KPU) held socialization of 2014 general election for voters in Surabaya, East Java.
"There are 180 million eligible voters in 2014 general elections. About 25 percent or 52 million people are first-time voters," Waluyo said on Saturday.
City of Surabaya has 5,015 polling stations with the highest eligible voters in Indonesia. Surabaya has 2.162 million voters and 500 thousands of them are the first-timers. Yet, those first timers are lacking of interest to participate in general elections.
Participation level in Indonesia tends to be low during recent years. In Surabaya, for example, the turnout in 2013 gubernatorial election was 54 percent.
