REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Regional Representative Council (DPD) wants the election of speaker and deputy speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to be conducted through deliberations.

"We will ensure that the election of MPR's leadership will be conducted through deliberations and consensus, and not through majority voting," Regional Representative Council chairman Irman Gusman said on Monday.

Irman remarked that the DPD did not want the election of MPR's leadership to be conducted through voting as it could injure the dignity of the Assembly as a people's consultative institution. He pointed out that the election of MPR's leaders, from Amien Rais to Taufik Kiemas, was conducted through deliberations.

"For example, in 2009, we deliberated on the leadership of MPR, and it gave us figures such as Taufik Kiemas without voting," he noted.

He stated that the discussion between the DPD, the Red-White Coalition and the Great Indonesian Coalition was still continuing. During the discussion, the DPD emphasized electing MPR's speaker and deputy speaker through deliberations.

"The DPD members will not walk out during the election of MPR's leadership, which is scheduled on Monday (October 6) night," he said.

Meanwhile, some parties proposed candidates for the election. The Red-White Coalition suggested appointing one member from the DPD for the speaker's post and four members from other political parties as deputy speakers.

The Great Indonesian Coalition proposed that the election of the MPR speaker and deputy speaker be conducted through deliberations. The coalition also proposed that the DPD chairman be made the MPR speaker for the 2014-19 period.
