Indonesia learns to change waste into electricity from Japan

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia continued to strengthen cooperation with Japan in technology. Director General of innovation, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti), Jumain Appe, said that to develop the technology, Indonesia need to learn from developed countries.

Jumain exemplifies one of the inventions of Japanese technology that could be developed in Indonesia. He said Japan has a waste management technologies that can change waste into electricity. This technology needs to be studied and applied in Indonesia.

Indonesia and Japan already have much cooperation in the field of research. From Indonesia, for example, the cooperation has been carried out through the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT). Moreover, it was supported by the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Airlangga University.

Head of Cooperation and Public Communication Bureau, Nada Marsudi, said since 2008, Indonesia has received a grant of Rp 20 billion for research. Nada explained that the funds were earmarked to sustainable development. The development is focused on four topics, namely natural disasters, infectious diseases, energy, and biological recourse.

“Indonesia has been running 13 projects with Japan. He argued, that the ability of Indonesian researchers has been recognized in developed countries,” he said.

Each year Japan provided one million US dollars per year for the project. Each project was spent up to five years. Until 2013, Indonesian researchers had earned Rp 250 billion.
