Trying to muted discourse of Dec 2 rally, Observer: Government is panic

At the press conference on Friday (11/18), the National Movement to Guard the Indonesian Council of Ulama's Fatwa (GNPF MUI) Chairman Bachtiar Nasir said on December 2 the movement will hold Friday prayer at Jakarta's main roads as Aksi Bela Islam III (3rd action to defend Islam).

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister of Defense Wiranto invited religious leaders to his office on Monday. During the end of the meeting, he played a clip from 1998's riot. He asked his guests to made a reflection and prevented it from re-occurring.

Wiranto said the 1998' riot was a setback, a national disorder. During the time, people did not obey the rule. Regarding allegation of religious blasphemy by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), Wiranto admitted the government was urged to take responsibility for the case.

According to Wiranto, personal mistake should be beared individually. He said it was unfair to ask government to take responsibility of one person mistake. "If they continue to push the government, surely something we did not wish will happen," he stressed.

Meanwhile, law observer from University of Indonesia Andri W Kusuma criticized government reaction regarding the discourse of Aksi Bela Islam III (3rd action to defend Islam) on December 2. By saying the rally after November 4 was a probable coup, the government signaled a panic response. "The government is panic, therefore there were efforts to muted the discourse of Aksi Bela Islam III," he remarked.

Andri said National Police Chief and TNI chief have made various statements about the discourse of December 2 rally. They said some parties are trying to ride the rally, naming it as a probable coup and even prohibit the National Movement to Guard the Indonesian Council of Ulama's Fatwa (GNPF MUI) to hold Friday prayer as they have planned. "Moreover, the National Police chief had to road shows to many parties about the rally, etc," Andri said on Monday.

According to Andri, the National Police and TNI should be ready, have anticipation and face all kind of possibilities. Including peaceful demonstration nor the action against constitution. "I guess, not optimum role of State Intelligence Agency (BIN) was the caused of the panic response," he said.
