REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Foreign Minister Affairs Retno Marsudi has urged Malaysia to open consular access for the citizen arrested over alleged murder of Kim Jong-nam, namely Siti Aisyah. According to her, consular access must be given as soon as possible in accordance with the Vienna conventions.

Retno affirmed the Embassy staff and lawyers who have been appointed have met with the investigators and received information that Siti Aisyah was in a healthy physical condition. However, permanent consular access immediately needed. "The granting of consular access to Siti Aisyah could help facilitate communication between investigators with citizen who was detained," Retno said while attended on the meeting of the ASEAN Ministerial Retreat Session, in Boracay, Philippines in an official statement received by Republika.co.id, on Tuesday (Feb 21).

A similar request was sent also by the Foreign Minister Affairs of Vietnam, Panh Binh Minh. Minh stressed that the provision of consular access was a fundamental right of foreign citizens detained in other countries.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato 'Sri Anifah promised to coordinate with the Malaysian police in order to demand consular access be given to Indonesia and Vietnam as soon as possible. Nevertheless, he said the investigation into the murder of Kim Jong-nam still ongoing.
