REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - About 2,613 students from some communities in Jakarta gathered in Fatahilah Museum to break Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) on the biggest batik making in Indonesia. "The record is to increase the creativity of Indonesian students," the Commander of Kodim 0503/West Jakarta, Lieutenant Colonel (Inf) Suwarno, said on Sunday.
The past record in 2010 was made in Semarang which involved 2,150 batik makers. The event was also an effort to eradicate vandalism among students while they could also preserve batik as a part of national culture, he added.
"Who knows, in the future they might use their talent and make money from it," he said.
The Spokesman of Bank Indonesia, Difi A Johansyah said the mass batik making was expected to increase the love of young generation to national tradition. "It can bring out positive aspect from creative economy in Indonesia," he said.
The event is initiates by Textil Museum, Kodam Jaya, Bank Indonesia, the Mayor of West Jakarta, Kota Tua Community, and Indonesian Batik People. The work will be exhibited in Muri Museum.
