REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- In recent days, several volcanoes in Indonesia including Mount Marapi in Sumbar have erupted or erupted. Most recently, on Monday (4/12/2023) today, Gunung Anak Krakatau (GAK) in the waters of the Sunda Strait bordering Lampung and Banten erupted five times.

The eruption of the mountain is also described in the Quran, both in the form of punishment and on the Day of Resurrection. Among them are found in Surah Al-Muzzammil verse 14. Allah says:

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْاَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِيْبًا مَّهِيْلًا

It means: “(Remember) the day (when) the earth and the mountains shook violently and the mountains became like gushing holes of sand.

This verse explains that the punishment occurred on the day when the earth and mountains shook so violently that mountains and hills became scattered, scattered like piles of sand flying.

In another verse, Allah SWT says:

وَتَكُوْنُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنْفُوْشِۗ

It means: “And the mountains are like scattered feathers. (QS al-Qari'ah [101]: 5)

In this verse, God reveals that the mountains that have been destroyed fly from their place like fluffy feathers flown by the wind. Then what is the state of a man with a weak body when he experiences al-Qariah (that thrilling day of Judgment).

In the Qur'an many other verses describe the state of the mountains on the Day of Resurrection, among which Allah SWT also says:

وَتَرَى الْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً وَّهِيَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ

It means: “And you will see the mountains, which you think remain in place, though they walk (as) the clouds walk. “(QS an-NAML [27]: 88)

وَّسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًاۗ

It means: “And the mountains are run so that they become a mirage”. (QS an- Naba' [78]: 20)

All these descriptions are to explain that the great and powerful mountains should remain immovable, but al-Qariah can destroy them, let alone the weak human beings.
