REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has urged people to continue to support the Palestinian struggle for independence, including by pressing on with the boycott of products affiliated with Israel.
"The MUI fatwa (edict) regarding Israeli products and products affiliated with Israel has never been revoked. Therefore, I call for the boycott of Israeli products to be continued," MUI chair for foreign relations and international cooperation, Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, said.
He made the statement on Tuesday to commemorate the first anniversary of the ongoing Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, which fell on Monday. The war has left at least 41,600 persons dead and over 96 thousand injured so far.
According to Hakim, MUI is continuing to consolidate by rallying the strength of Islamic mass organizations and a large number of Islamic philanthropists to support Palestinian independence.
During a demonstration in front of the United States Embassy in Jakarta, Muslim figures emphasized the importance of Indonesian solidarity in supporting the struggle for Palestinian independence from the Zionist Israeli occupation regime.
The demonstration was themed "Joint Struggle to Commemorate 1 Year of Genocide in Gaza and 76 Years of Palestinian Resistance."
The boycott of products affiliated with Israel is considered a concrete action to help the Palestinian struggle.
The MUI is also driving the call for a boycott through social media platforms, including X.
"Today marks exactly one year of the Israeli aggression in Gaza. At least 40 thousand Palestinians have died and millions live in refugee camps. Boycotting Israeli-affiliated products will not reduce the comfort of our lives at all..." wrote a user named @fotodakwah.
The calls for boycott cover fast food products, packaged drinks, coffee, milk, and other daily necessities.
