REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Religious Affairs published an anti-violence regulation against children in boarding schools. The rule was enshrined in the Decision of the Minister of Religious Affairs No. 91 of 2025 on the Roadmap for the Development of Child-Friendly Pesantren Program.
This latest regulation is in response to cases of sexual assault against pupils occurring at boarding schools.
“This roadmap should be a guide for boarding schools to have sensitivity to children and provide maximum protection,” said Pesantren Director of Kemenag Basnang Said in Jakarta, Monday (17/2/2025).
The boarding school is an educational institution condensed with religious, moral, and character nuances. However, that does not mean that there are not cases that tarnish this institution.
According to the records collected by the Ministry of Education, during January-August 2024, 101 children were victims of sexual violence in boarding schools.
According to the Indonesian Federation of Teachers' Unions (FSGI), 69 percent of the victims were boys and 31 percent were girls.
The high number, gave rise to public encouragement for the Ministry of Education to make clear efforts for the prevention and handling of sexual violence in educational units within the scope of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, especially boarding schools.
